Wine of the Week for December 17, 2007

Konzelmann Pinot Blanc VQA 2006 - $10.15
Style: W1
Canada: Niagara

This is a delightful example of what this grape can do in Niagara. The colour is a medium almond-straw. Rich and spicy on the nose, with citrus, banana, pine and a touch of apricot and a slight woody note. Barely off-dry with yummy apple-grapefruit flavours, delicate acidity and a hint of spritz. A nice choice for antipasto, ham or seasonal bird. (LCBO 219279)

Wine of the Week for December 3, 2007

Concha y Toro "Trio" Sauvignon Blanc 2005 - $ 12.95
Style: W2
Chile

What I like at Sauvignon is its ability to adapt and even excel in a variety of terroirs. Here we have a medium platinum-straw coloured wine that is loaded lush gooseberries and crushed leaves on the nose with just a touch of crabapple. Tangy orange peel leads off on the palate, with a crisp and refreshing acidity closing with tangy lemon. Very good, fleshy, and with good length. An excellent example of typicity that will go well with any kind of bird or fish, although I would go with stuffed peppers. (LCBO 678656)

Wine of the Week for November 26, 2007

"Italia" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2003 - $9.70
Style: R1
Italy

The nose presents attractive aromas of dried cherry, sassafras and vanilla pod. The plate is modest but tasty, with raspberry/cherry flavor and medium tannins. A somewhat "trendy" that would be ideal with pizza or pasta. (LCBO 35154)

Wine of the Week for November 19, 2007

Moselland Bernkasteler Kurfurstlay Riesling 2005 - $9.45
Style: W3
Germany

Here's another exceptional wine at a shockingly low price. Look for huge dried peach, cinnamon spice, and gooseberry with a hint of petrol. The palate is medium sweet -- ideal for the style -- with a soft acidity, tangy lemon and apricot flavours. Crisp and clean with very good body and length. The profile is classic, with bang-on typicity. Demands snitzel or roast pork. (LCBO 15875)

Wine of the Week for November 10, 2007

Drostdy-Hof Reserve Shiraz 2006 - $12.95
Style: R2
South Africa

Somebody obviously didn't get the memo about plonk and tetrapaks. Here we have a full litre of rather good wine, wrapped in cardboard, plastic and aluminum. The nose shows dark chocolate, blackberry and vanilla, with nuances of bell pepper and smoke. The palate is quite smooth, somewhat sweetish, with juicy blueberry, black berry and raspberry flavours, moderate tannins and a good acidic spine. Very good value for any night of the week and a good partner for antipasto, stuffed peppers or BBQ bird. (LCBO 669036)

Wine of the Week for November 5, 2007

Santa Carolina Chardonnay 2006 - $9.45
Style: W1
Chile

Here's a terrific bargain that would be good any night of the week. Rich caramel, tropical fruits, butter and a whiff of apple pie on the nose. Very good presence on the palate -- smooth and silky with citrus, apple and smoke flavours and a clean acidity. Amazingly dense and complex for this price range. Try with salmon/trout, pork roast or chicken burgers. (LCBO 259192)

Wine of the Week for October 29, 2007

Arniston Bay Shiraz-Merlot 2005 - $9.95
Style: R1
South Africa

The inky black cherry robe suggests more substance than the price would suggest. The nose is a complex mix of spice, blackberry, dark chocolate, sour cherry, and pepper. In the background there is a hint of pinotage. The palate shows rich cherry and strawberry, somewhat sweetish on the uptake, with a good acidic spine and fine tannins. Fairly light but very tasty and bargain priced. (LCBO 43927)

Wine of the Week for October 22, 2007

20 Bees Pinot Grigio 2006 - $13.15
Style: W3
Ontario: Niagara

This co-operative winery consists of 19 grapegrowers and a winemaker, and is on the forefront of new initiatives, including an effort to sell Ontario’s terroir. This is a very fine effort that starts out with a chemical note but settles down to stonefruits, grass, mineral and a whiff of tar. Somewhat understated on the palate, with apple/lemon flavour, crisp acidity and mellow finish. Partner with fish stews, pork dishes or smoked salmon. (LCBO 60707)

Wine of the Week for October 15, 2007

Trapiche Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 - $8.85
Style: R1
Argentina

This unassuming offering shows a decent cab-like nose, with blackberry, black currant, fruit leather, and twinges of iodine, mint, and cedar. The palate shows a firm acidity bite, mild tannins and black current/blackberry flavour. Medium body and length. A "cheap and cheerful" wine that would work any night of the week. Think of an everyday chianti and serve it alongside spaghetti, pizza or anything grilled. (LCBO 235671)

Wine of the Week for October 8, 2007

Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - $13.15
Style: W2
South Africa

Wonderful aromas of grass, canned asparagus and passionfruit. Somewhat laid back on the palate, with loads of lemon and grapefruit flavour and an almost searing acidity. Good body and length. The nose is the star here, with enough character on the palate to carry it through. Try with shellfish, hollandaise sauce, or poached fish. (LCBO 22251)

Wine of the Week for October 1, 2007

El Burro "Kickass" Garnacha 2005 - $12.15
Style: R2
Spain: Camp de Borja

When I first tasted this wine I wasn’t impressed, but it managed to improve wonderfully in the glass over time quite. Keep in mind that this is the grape that gives us Cotes du Rhone. The colour here is a deep garnet. The high alcohol is apparent on the nose, along with dark plum, dark chocolate, fruit leather and cigar box. Big, "steamy" and rich, with juicy, ripe mixed berries and smooth tannins. This mini-monster goes down easy today and yet would age very well over the next 2-4 years. Serve with hearty roasts or any red meat -- kangaroo and the like. (LCBO 18929)

Wine of the Week for September 17, 2007

Concha y Toro Chardonnay 2006 - $11.95
Style; W1
Chile

I love the slightly "skunky" aroma from French oak coupled with chardonnay. Add in lemon, oak, and mineral and you've got an appealing profile. The palate is creamy, round and tasty, with a soft acidity, and a toasty baked apple flavour. Somewhat on the light side, but overall a very good effort. Try with chicken Kiev or egg dishes. (LCBO 58420)

Wine of the Week for September 10, 2007

Torres de Casta Rosado - $11.15
Style: Rosé
Spain: Cataluna

Not quite prepared to give up on summer? How about something pink? There's a good amount of raspberry on the nose here, with a touch of apple. Good acidity supports blackberry, raspberry and spicy flavours. Medium bodied with good length, it would go well with warm weather and a relaxing afternoon on the deck. (LCBO 619916)

Wine of the Week for September 3, 2007

Terra d'Aliga Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2004 - $11.95
Style: R3
Italy

I often shy away from montepulciano because of the forward acidity, but this one is a bit more tame in that category. The nose is quite subtle, showing dark plums, moss, damp wood, stewed raisins, and a bit of spice. The palate is pure elegance -- soft and smooth with prune/plum flavour, delicate tannins and a whiff if spice on the close. Seem to have caught this one at its perfect age. Enjoy with roast beef, ham or tomato sauces. (LCBO 28530)

Welnerberg Pinotage - $ 10.70
Style: R3 (Kosher)
South Africa

You don't need to be observing a Jewish holiday to enjoy this. If you're vegetarian, note that kosher wines must be made without any animal products. The robe is a deep black cherry/garnet. The nose is laid back, showing ripe berries, root veg and just a touch of sassafras along with a touch of classic Pinotage dust. Very good mouthfeel, with bumbleberry flavour, a firm acid core and moderate tannins. Quite yummy and a versatile choice for any sort of protein. (LCBO 28423)

Wine of the Week for August 27, 2007

Rene Barbier Mediterranean White 2005 - $8.65
Style: W2
Spain

Here's another Spanish bargain that will work well in a variety of settings. The nose shows very good stone fruit aromas with traces of citrus and melon. The palate has a refreshing acidity with gobs of ripe apple flavour. Very good body and length and a lightly tart finish. A good choice for light fish or Mediterranean-style sandwiches. (LCBO 332767)

Wine of the Week for August 13, 2007

Castillo de Almansa Reserva 2002 - $ 11.10
Style: R3
Spain: La Mancha

The full black cherry colour suggests a hearty wine, but the emphasis here is on practicality and utilitarian enjoyment . The nose seems somewhat simple at first, but shows ample black raspberry and traces of black currant and mushroom. The palate is smooth, with fullish body, firm tannins and a solid acid core. Not overly exciting, but perfect for a Tuesday evening meal. Try with eggplant parmesan, burgers or lamb sausage. (LCBO 270363)

Wine of the Week for July 30 2007

Twin Fin Pinot Grigio 2006 - $14.15
Style: W3
California

The nose shows lush tropical fruits, lemon drops, dried peach and traces of spice and herbs. The palate seemed a bit hollow at first, due to being over chilled, but it filled out nicely as it progressed, showing peach, pear, apple and apricot flavours, with a juicy fruitiness and a fine acidity. Very good body and length with a citrusy close. A delightful rendition that will go nicely with stir fry, veggie wraps or as a "vin de porch". (LCBO 38323)

Wine of the Week for July 23 2007

Henry of Pelham Cabernet Franc 2005 - $14.15
Style: R1
Canada: Niagara

Ah, the lowly cab franc grape … often dismissed as a “poor cousin” to cab sauv, this grape shows both class and elegance, given the opportunity. The nose here is quite vegetal, with aromas of grass, blackcurrant, vanilla and more. The palate is rather juicy, with a firm acid spine, moderate tannins and bright berry flavours. Pretty young at this point but it promises to evolve nicely over the next 3-5 years. Classic cab franc that will go well with shellfish, pork, aged cheeses or shepherds pie. (LCBO 27839)

Wine of the Week for July 16, 2007

Trapiche Malbec-Cabernet Rosé 2006 - $9.15
Style: Rosé
Argentina

This brilliant candy-apple pink summer offering shows spicy citrus and red berries with a trace of pine. The refreshing palate is dominated by strawberry accompanied by a light spritz and a crisp close. Light, easy and pure refreshment. (LCBO 36426)

Worth Looking For

Pascual Toso Malbec 2004 - $12.95
Style: R2
Argentina

Quantities are limited on this one, so if you see a bottle on the shelf, grab it. The nose shows lush aromas of spice, damp wood, and dark berry mash, with touch of plum. Soft, smooth and round on the palate with a firm acid core, silky smooth tannins, and loads of berry and plum flavours. Body and length are both quite good. If you're feeling adventurous, put a few bottles away for a couple of years. (LCBO 35170)

Wine of the Week for July 9, 2007

Fetzer 'Valley Oaks' Pinot Grigio 2005 - $11.95
Style: W3
California

There's a rich cocktail of aromas here: spice, gooseberry, and grapefruit with nuances of apricot and vanilla. The palate is mouth-watering with a citrusy acidity and loads of peach flavour. Very good body and length, with a pleasantly tart close. This juicy fruit-bomb would be terrific at any chill level. A perfect partner for the grill, including seafood, poultry or pork on a stick (LCBO 34041)

Wine of the Week for June 25, 2007

Jacobs Creek Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 - $22.95 (1.5 l)
Style: R2
Australia

It's tempting to write this off as party plonk -- and it would be an excellent choice even then -- but this wine holds more than enough character to please any crowd. The colour is deep black cherry. The nose presents huge spice, cedar, dark chocolate black berry and black current aromas. The palate is perhaps a bit timid, but shows a nice juiciness with blackberry flavour and sinewy tannins. Body and length are both very good. A good match for BBQ ribs, brisket, or pepper steak. (LCBO 19612)

Also available in 750 mil, at $12.15 (LCBO 106377)

Wine of the Week for June 18, 2007

FOLONARI SOAVE 2005 - $10.30
Style: W2
Italy: Veneto

The weather's warm so it's time to break out the traditional lunch-time wines. The rich citrus notes here suggest lemon and orange zest, with traces of almond and grass just under the surface. The pleasantly tart palate is quite delicate, sowing baked lemon, a bit of apple, and a nippy acidic close. Body and length are both quite good. Try with simple Tuscan-inspired sandwiches, lunchtime pizza or risotto. (LCBO 176461)

Wine of the Week for June 11, 2007

Chapoutier Belleruche Cotes du Rhone 2005- $15.25
Style: R2
France

In our house, this would be a special occasion or company wine. Still, it’s a pretty good price for the quality. Deep ruby in colour, is shows a light nose with nuances of vanilla, chocolate and spice. Nicely juicy, with bumbleberry flavour, solid acidity and firm tannins. Very good body and length. Hard to pin down, but very solid and very food friendly. Try with hearty roasts or lamb. (LCBO 665422)

Wine of the Week for June 4, 2007

Long Flat Chardonnay 2005 - $13.15 (1L Tetrapak)
Style: W1
Australia

Here’s irrefutable proof that tetrapak wines needn’t be crap. The nose here shows a slightly musty note -- suggesting oak -- alongside baked lemon and pear. The palate is quite solid, with an uplifting acidity and rich lemon/apple/caramel flavours, all supported by good body and length. Quite a good offering for the price. Would work well with any weekend BBQ. (LCBO 24794)

Wine of the Week for May 28, 2007

Casillero del Diablo Shiraz Rosé 2006 - $12.15
Style: Rosé
Chile

This winery is always a good source of value with quality. The colour here is a deep apple pink -- almost ruby. There's a good bit of spice on the nose accompanied by ripe apple and traces of blackberry. Quite solid and refreshing, showing a good bit of weight, with a luscious mix of apple and dark berries. One for the BBQ and able to stand up to heavier dishes. (LCBO 39479)

Wine of the Week for May 21, 2007

Pelee Island Baco Noir VQA 2005 - $10.95
Style: R2
Canada: Pelee Island

While Pelee Island Winery churns out a lot of Cellared in Canada plonk, it's nice to see them also producing good VQA wines. The nose here is classic baco: spicy cedar wood and blueberry with a slight pickly impression. There’s a good baco bite on the palate with a forward acidity, mild tannins, plus blueberry and blackberry flavour. Very good body and length. Quite refined without losing the baco character. Nicely done, ans suitable for grilled red meats, curry or tomato sauces. (LCBO 485128)

Wine of the Week for May 14, 2007

Dancing Bull Chardonnay 2005 - $10.05
Style: W1
California

Nothing earth shattering here -- just a good, simple wine at a fair price. Full straw in colour, it shows good oak and butter on the nose, accompanied by traces of baked lemon and baked apple. A little thin, with mainly over-ripe apple flavour and a slightly tart close. Try with simple fish or pork dishes. (LCBO 29991)

Wine of the Week for May 7, 2007

Fonte Al Sole Toscana I.G.T. 2003 - $13.15
Style: R3
Italy: Tuscany

Deep garnet coloured with a touch of mahogany. The nose is very earthy combined with leather, dried cherry and a hint of animale. Very nicely balance on the palate, with moderate tannins, firm acidity, cherry/strawberry flavour and an earthy close. Very good body and length. A splendid example and an exceptional stand-in for quality chianti. Try with hearty stews, firm cheese or game fowl. (LCBO 18994)

Worth Looking for...

Stoney Ridge Bench Cabernet Franc VQA 2004 - $13.05
Style: R1
Canada: Niagara

This one reminds me more of Pinot Noir or Bourgeuil, with wood, red currant, vanilla and pickle juice on the nose. Light on the palate, sweetish on the uptake, with a solid acid spine, fine tannins and gobs of blackberry flavour. It would be amusing to cellar a few bottles for 2-3 years. Too bad it's been discontinued at the LCBO. (LCBO 525691)

Wine of the Week for April 30, 2007

KWV Chardonnay 2006 - $10.60
Style: W1
South Africa

Here's a simple, reliable performer that will work well on any weeknight. The nose leads off with butter and baked lemon, followed by subtle aromas of mackintosh apple and grapefruit. The palate is pleasantly tart, with a crisp acidity, grapefruit and lemon flavours, and a smokey close. Body and length are both quite good. Try with BBQ chicken or quiche. (LCBO 304360)

Wine of the Week for April 23, 2007

Dancing Bull Cabernet Sauvignon 2002- $13.95
Style: R3
California

A Cal Cab for under 15 bucks? This one shows rich vanilla, chocolate, black currant and blackberries on the nose, with just a hint of marshmallow. Sweet and juicy berries on the attack, silky smooth with blueberry and cherry flavours, mild tannins and a good core of strength. Rather full bodied and nicely balanced with an elegant finish. A gentle mannered wine that is suitable for sweetish dishes such as stews, tomato sauces or lamb. (LCBO 30023)

(The current trend at the LCBO is toward fast-turnover bulk wines, often in 'creative' packaging. There also seems to be a dearth of decent white wines being brought in, and those that do make the grade (MY grade) are often over priced. I had originally picked Matua Riesling to feature, but it's over $16 -- not a bargain at all!)

Wine of the Week for April 16, 2007

Errazuriz Estate Carmenere 2005 - $13.95
Style: R2
Chile

Now but a faded memory in its native Bordeaux, Carmenere seems to have found the perfect terroir in Chile. Aromas here show tea, dried fruits, sassafras and spice, with a hint of wood. Very solid on the palate, with firm tannins, cherry, bumbleberry and tea flavour. Very flavourful with Good body and length, this solid performer could benefit from another year or two in the cellar. Pair with hearty roasts or stews. (LCBO 16238)

Worth a Look...

Konzelmann Riesling (Dry) 2006 VQA - $11.45
Style: More W2 than W3
Ontario: Niagara

I usually hold out for more character in Ontario riesling, but this one has charm and appeal that would fall in the vicinity of a vinho verde or muscadet. Aromas are delicate and include lime and beeswax. There's a light spritz on the palate that nicely sets up the lemon-lime flavour, with just a whisper of mango at the close. Should this November-style weather ever go away, I'd recommend this one for a lazy afternoon on the deck. (LCBO 200501)

Wine of the Week for April 9, 2007

Tarapaca Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - $9.20
Style: W2
Maipo Valley, Chile

I'm continually impressed with what comes out of this winery, and their prices, across the board, are pretty easy to take. The nose shows classic sauvignon, with rich pink grapefruit pulp and meadow grass with nuances of lemongrass and rosemarie. Crisp and zesty on the palate, with ripe lemon/grapefruit flavour. Good body and length with a zippy close, it would go well with fish in cream sauce, alfredo, or stuffed mushrooms. (LCBO 414185)
~~~
If you're in the neighbourhood of Vineland Estates, I strongly recommend you try their 2004 Reserve Pinot Noir. We uncorked a bottle with Easter dinner and it was an absolute hit, even with the beer drinkers. A bit young -- and pricey ($40) -- but cellaring a few bottles for a couple of years would be well worthwhile.
Wine of the Week for April 2, 2007
Aveleda Vinho Verde 2005 - $8.15
Style: W2
Portugal
On the down side, the LCBO offers very few Portuguese white wines, although most are pretty good value. On the plus side, this perennial favourite offers more substance and character than previous vintages. Crisp aromas display lemon, lime, melon and traces of spice. A light spritz defines the palate. Soft and creamy, with gobs of citrus, it's rather light and satisfyingly refreshing, with more character than expected. A good wine to warm up the room, or as an accompaniment to hors d'oeuvre or shellfish. (LCBO 5322 Also available in 1.5 Litre - $15.85 / 238683)
Wine of the Week for March 26, 2007
Alianca Bairrada Reserva DOC 2003 - $8.25
Style: R3
Portugal
I’m continuing my focus on Portuguese wines with this rich, deep ruby coloured example. Heady aromas include earth, garrigue, cherry, cedar, leather, red licorice and a whiff of perfume. The palate is soft with firm tannins, understated fruit and a fine acidic core. Weight and length are both medium. This could go another year or two in the cellar, or serve with chilli or spaghetti. (LCBO 158741)
Lehmann Weighbridge Chardonnay 2005 - $10.90
Style: W1
Australia
This, sadly, has been delisted by the LCBO, but you might be able to find bottles still on the shelves. (I hope it has a more prominent status outside of Ontario.) Light aromas here include spice, apple and quince with a suggestion of honey. The palate is quite tasty, showing apple and lemon flavours, with a crisp acidity. Good body and length, and a crisp lemony close. A bit shy, but very good value. (LCBO 622217)
Drink Wine and Do Good Works!
Starting in April, South Africa’s Obikwa Wines is launching their 3rd Annual Campaign to Support Nelson Mandela’s Children Fund (Canada) to help children in need. Part of the proceeds from each bottle of Obikwa sold in Canada will be contributed to the charity.
Although I can’t direct you to any specific wine (not in my notes at this point), you might consider trying their Sauvignon Blanc (LCBO 527465; $8.75), Shiraz (LCBO 527499; $9.25), or Cabernet Sauvignon (LCBO 665323; $9.25) and then report back to me.
Over the past two years Obikwa has donated $25,000 to the Fund. The 2007 donation will increase by $20,000 bringing the total to $45,000.
Lowered Expectations
A stint of tasting LCBO General List wines is not one of my favourite pass-times. But it's where I find those occasional cost-effective gems that become my Wine of the Week. This past Friday, the General List tasting was made up entirely of Tetrapak and alternatively packaged wines (thanks to Dean Tudor for championing this issue), and I must say I have never encountered a more dismal collection of wines -- 78 in total, 78 shelf spots that could have been stocked with decent wine!
I would like to reiterate my feelings about Tetrapaks. For the most part, they remain a clear visual indicator of what is low-end jug wine and what is not. In this case, I found a shocking number of bad, faulty and even insulting wines. But all is not lost. Given that the majority of Tetrapaks give you an extra 250 ml, one might argue that these are $9 - $10 wines and therefore could, in theory, deliver some real value. I'm not going along with that, though. An extra helping of oxidized wine is not a bargain.
I have, in the past, recommended one Tetrapak "Prisma" wine, the Saluna Pinot Grigio (LCBO 614412). While I don’t feel I can unreservedly recommend the following, I don’t mind passing on these suggestions for those times when quantity and price are the primary criteria, and wine quality is a very low priority. - TFO
Black Tower Riesling 2005 - $13.15
Actually a pretty good entry-level Riesling showing nice vegetal, herb, paraffin and lime-pulp aromas. Soft, just off-dry, with a musty note and traces of peach and citrus on the palate. Light and somewhat short. (LCBO 614321)
Kumala Sauvignon Blanc 2003 - $12.15
Kumala is an African wine from Canada's Vincor, which is now owned by Constellation in the US. Multi cultural? I think not, but it's an OK wine. The nose shows good vegetal, green pepper and grass aromas, with hints of passionfruit and vanilla. Actually quite thin with nuances of grapefruit on the palate. Probably best at poolside. (LCBO 16147)
Wolf Blass Bilyara Reserve Chardonnay 2005 -$13.95
Nothing exceptional here, just reliable -- but overpriced -- Blass in a PET plastic bottle. For fans. (LCBO 8128, 750 ml)
Soluna Merlot Delle Venezia IGT - 2004 $13.15
The nose here is on the rustic side, with black licorice, dried cherry, blackcurrant and a touch of raspberry. Another thin one, though with sturdy tannins, a bit of cherry flavour and a dusty finish. Might go well with burgers. (LCBO 614420)
Concha y Toro ‘Likan’ Merlot 2005 - $12.15
This one shows a decent, almost cab-like nose with vanilla, chocolate, bell pepper and spice. Thinnish, with soft tannins and cherry flavours, quite light and a bit short, but palatable enough. (LCBO 665331)
Wolf Blass Bilyara Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 - $15.95
Same as for the Chardonnay, with an even more skewed price/quality ratio. Note that these plastic bottles have a shelf life of less than a year, so check the bottling date. (LCBO 8136, 750 ml)
Kumala Shiraz 2005 - $12.15
Look for spice up front, followed by cedar, blackcurrant, raisin and a trace of vanilla. The palate is smooth and silky with a chocolate/vanilla impression, firm tannins and a solid acid spine. Just shy of medium body and length. A bit on the sweet side but basically well balanced with decent flavour. (LCBO 16154)
Baldivis Shiraz ‘Cheer Pack’ 2003 - $ 13.95
The packaging looks like an intravenous bag, and it's 750 ml, not a full litre. The nose shows intriguing aromas of spice, fruit leather, vanilla, cinnamon, and dark chocolate. Rather sweet, with soft tannins, firm acidity, and sweet berry flavours. OK body and length. It's actually rather tasty and has quite a good nose, but this price is way off base. (LCBO 669077, 750 ml)
Botter ‘Luca’ Nero d'Avola IGT 2005 - $13.15
Currently my favourite grape, I was hoping for more from this. The nose shows funky animale aromas alongside cedar, vanilla, and subtle red berries. The palate is a bit thin, but showing some nice raspberry flavour, light tannins and a cool acidity. Might be a good candidate for pork ribs off the grill. (LCBO 613604)
Wine of the Week for March 12, 2007
Vista Touriga Nacional Berias Red 2004 - $13.20
Style: R3
Portugal
Made entirely of the Touriga Nacional grape (the fundamental grape found in "real" port), this delightful wine shows blueberry, leather, earthy and vegetal aromas. The palate is soft and smooth with dusty tannins, dark berry flavours and a very dry finish. Good body and length. Ideal as a BBQ wine or with simple roasts. (LCBO 613919)
Wine of the Week for March 5, 2007
Danante Pinot Grigio 2005 - $13.95
Style: W3
Italy
There is a terrific nose here, showing melon, lime, green apple and a touch of celery. Lightish on the palate yet smooth with a soft acidity and ripe apple flavour. Lighter bodied and with good length. Pair with light fish, smoked salmon or simple white meats so you can revel in the nose. (LCBO 26906)
Wine of the Week for February 26, 2007
Vineland Estates Cabernet Franc 2005 - $12.95
Style: R3
Ontario: Niagara
The nose here shows juicy black cherry, mint, and dark chocolate with traces of spice and vegetal. The palate is also juicy, with the merest trace of sweetness in the fruit, delicate tannins, and plum, cherry and dried raspberry flavours. Very good body and length. This one is a crowd pleaser and would work well with a wide variety of red meat dishes, pork or chocolate. (LCBO 594127)
Wine of the Week for February 19, 2007
Lazy Lizard Sauvignon Blanc Vin de Pays d'Oc 2005 - $12.95
Style: W2
France
Real in-your-face character here, with aromas of crushed leaves, grapefruit zest and a trace of vanilla. Rich and creamy on the palate with ripe grapefruit flavour and a searing acidity. Rather big with very good length and a slightly tart finish, just waiting to be tamed by the right foods. Grilled asparagus comes to mind or fish with dill or perhaps stuffed peppers. (LCBO 21170)
BTW, I changed the template for this blog to something a little more upbeat, and to be more consistent with my other stuff. I hope you approve.
Wine of the Week for February 12, 2007
Durbanville Hills Shiraz 2004 - $13.15
Style: R2
If you’ve had your fill of syrupy shiraz for the time being, try this easy going rendition. With a deep blackcherry colour. It shows gobs of spice, fruit leather, milk chocolate, and a touch of deli meat on the nose. The palate is soft spoken, with cherry and spice flavours, light tannins and a firm acidic core. Medium body and length, quite friendly, and a good bet for vegetarian lasagna, chili, or BBQ chicken. (LCBO 22269)
I have recently finished my latest writing project, a "novel" approach to wine education. I have put the first chapter online as a blog, which you can read and comment on. I'd love to get some feedback on this approach so please take a minute to stop by: oenophilenextdoor.blogspot.com.
Wine of the Week for February 5, 2007
Bolla Soave Classico 2005 - $10.95
Style: W2
Italy
Delicate aromas of hazelnut lead off here, accompanied by apple and citrus. The palate is equally delicate -- but tasty -- with buckwheat honey and grapefruit, and not a trace of sweetness, with a delectable tartness. On the lighter side, with very good length, this is a flavourful lunchtime wine that would suit lighter fish or pasta dishes. (LCBO 17640)
This is the week that Ontario Beer Stores begin to take back LCBO bottles. If you have a number of non-deposit bottles lying around, go easy. The Beer Store won't ask any questions as long as you play fair. The deposit is 10 cents for smaller bottles and 20 cents for larger.
Wine of the Week for January 29, 2007
Calatrasi Terrale Nero d'Avola IGT 2004 - $9.45
Style: R2
Sicilia
This just goes to prove one of my frugal mottoes: Look for less well know grapes, in this case the signature grape of Sicily. The deep ruby colour shows a touch of garnet. On the nose you can find rich spiced crabapple followed by dried cherries and a hint of red licorice. Light, almost candy-like on the palate, with fine tannins, topped by raspberry. Very good body and length. Almost a steal at this price. Try with ragu, grilled steak or hard cheeses. (LCBO 621177)
Wine of the Week for January 22, 2007
Geo. Duboeuf Chardonnay V. de Pay D'Oc 2004 - $9.80
Style: W1
France
The aromas here include tropical fruits, spice, baked apple, and hints of citrus and caramel. Round and gentle with lemon/grapefruit flavour and a crisp close. Very good body and length. A delightful bargain that would go nicely with with ocean fish or schnitzel. And it comes in an attractive silk-screened bottle! (LCBO 20552)
Wine of the Week for January 15, 2007
Ampelou Gis Tempranillo/Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 - $14.20
Style: R2
Greece
We have here a mini tour of Europe, with Spanish Tempranillo, French Cabernet and Greek soil going into the mix! The robe is rich garnet, with a rather gamey nose, plus dried cherry, smoke, old leather, and a suggestion of newly sawn mahogany. Round, smooth, and mellow with mature tannins and mainly cherry flavour. With good body and length, this is quite a stunning effort. In fact, my notes say "Fab". Try with moussaka, roast leg of lamb, or perhaps goulash. (LCBO 619593)
Wine of the Week for January 8, 2007
Nederburg Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - $10.95
Style: W2
South Africa
The competition to create great sauvignon seems to be heating up, with quality increasing as prices come down. This is a fantastic example for the money, with classic passionfruit, grass, gooseberry, and canned asparagus aromas. The palate is crisp and loaded with citrus/grapefruit flavour, with very good body and length, and a tangy close. Worth at least $5 more, it would be ideal to put with herby poultry, anything with rosemary, or very flavourful fish. (LCBO 382713)
Wine of the Week for January 1, 2007
Legends Estate Merlot VQA 2004 - $12.95
Style: R3
Canada: Niagara
The nose on this one is a bit on the vegetal side, with oodles of green pepper, raisin and a touch of dill. The palate shows bumbleberry with a bit of cedar alongside firm tannins and a solid acid core, good body and length. Not your mainstream Merlot -- but quite enjoyable. Would be a good match for full flavoured cheese such as asiago, antipasto, or something with tomato sauce. (LCBO 27847)
