Jacobs Creek Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 - $22.95 (1.5 l)
Style: R2
Australia

It's tempting to write this off as party plonk -- and it would be an excellent choice even then -- but this wine holds more than enough character to please any crowd. The colour is deep black cherry. The nose presents huge spice, cedar, dark chocolate black berry and black current aromas. The palate is perhaps a bit timid, but shows a nice juiciness with blackberry flavour and sinewy tannins. Body and length are both very good. A good match for BBQ ribs, brisket, or pepper steak. (LCBO 19612)

Also available in 750 mil, at $12.15 (LCBO 106377)

FOLONARI SOAVE 2005 - $10.30
Style: W2
Italy: Veneto

The weather's warm so it's time to break out the traditional lunch-time wines. The rich citrus notes here suggest lemon and orange zest, with traces of almond and grass just under the surface. The pleasantly tart palate is quite delicate, sowing baked lemon, a bit of apple, and a nippy acidic close. Body and length are both quite good. Try with simple Tuscan-inspired sandwiches, lunchtime pizza or risotto. (LCBO 176461)

Chapoutier Belleruche Cotes du Rhone 2005- $15.25
Style: R2
France

In our house, this would be a special occasion or company wine. Still, it’s a pretty good price for the quality. Deep ruby in colour, is shows a light nose with nuances of vanilla, chocolate and spice. Nicely juicy, with bumbleberry flavour, solid acidity and firm tannins. Very good body and length. Hard to pin down, but very solid and very food friendly. Try with hearty roasts or lamb. (LCBO 665422)

Long Flat Chardonnay 2005 - $13.15 (1L Tetrapak)
Style: W1
Australia

Here’s irrefutable proof that tetrapak wines needn’t be crap. The nose here shows a slightly musty note -- suggesting oak -- alongside baked lemon and pear. The palate is quite solid, with an uplifting acidity and rich lemon/apple/caramel flavours, all supported by good body and length. Quite a good offering for the price. Would work well with any weekend BBQ. (LCBO 24794)
